Environmental/Location portraiture offers a vast range of possibilities. Choosing the right location is the first key step in the process. What might look like a totally unpromising location can actually result in a lovely contemporary background for a portrait shot. In this gallery I have included shots from a range of locations including abbey ruins, graffiti areas in London, steps in various places, walls etc. With the right lighting and posing of the subject these types of locations turn into wonderful canvases.
In terms of lighting equipment for these, I usually use two, maybe three additional lights with appropriate light modifiers to achieve the desired effect.
This is quite a challenging form of portraiture, but it can lead to results that are quite different to other forms. Whilst not shown in this gallery, environmental portraiture works really well for children, providing images that stand out from the norm.
